Shipping policy
Everything you need to know before shipping documents or packages from New York to the Dominican Republic, and how we handle your shipment while it is with us.
Last updated: October 29, 2026 · Version 2026-10-29
01What we ship
We ship documents and packages from the United States to the Dominican Republic. We receive shipments at our office in the Bronx, New York; transport, customs clearance and final delivery are handled by an external courier (“the carrier”).
- Documents: papers, certificates, contracts, records and other documents with no commercial value.
- Packages: clothing, gifts, online purchases, shoes, personal and household items.
02Prohibited items
Prohibited by law or by air transport security rules. We never accept them:
- Firearms, ammunition, weapon parts and explosives.
- Fireworks, compressed gases and flammable liquids (gasoline, denatured alcohol, spray paint) and other undeclared dangerous goods.
- Illegal drugs and controlled substances.
- Counterfeit goods or items that infringe trademarks.
- Lithium batteries that are damaged, defective or recalled by the manufacturer.
- Material that is illegal to ship or possess, and goods requiring an export license you do not have.
Not accepted by RV Courier as a business decision, even where the law may allow them:
- Cash, bearer checks, loaded gift cards, loose precious metals and stones.
- Loose or spare lithium batteries (without the device they power).
- Live animals or animal remains.
- Perishable food.
- Replicas or imitations of weapons.
- Pornographic material.
These lists are not complete: the carrier and the authorities may prohibit other items. If a shipment contains prohibited items we will refuse it or, if they are found later, the authorities may hold or seize it with no refund of the service.
03Restricted items
These items can only be shipped under certain conditions. Ask us before bringing them.
Medicines and supplements
Personal use only and in reasonable quantities; may require a prescription or a permit from Dominican health authorities.
Non-perishable food, seeds and plants
May require a permit from Dominican agricultural authorities. We do not ship perishables.
Perfumes, cosmetics and aerosols
Many are flammable liquids or aerosols regulated for air transport. They are only shipped if the carrier accepts them, under its conditions.
Electronics with batteries
The battery must be installed in the device or packed with it, undamaged. Acceptance depends on the carrier.
Jewelry, watches and high-value items
Ask us first: the value may exceed the compensation the carrier offers.
Goods for resale
Treated as a commercial import: requires an invoice, pays taxes and may need formal clearance.
We do not give blanket approvals for dangerous goods: each case depends on the conditions of the air carrier that actually transports it and on the rules in force.
04Drop-off and registration
When we receive your shipment at the office:
- We record your name and phone number as the sender; we may ask for an ID.
- We record the recipient: name, phone number and delivery address.
- We write down the description of the contents you declare. You present the declared value and the invoice, when the shipment requires them, at drop-off.
- We weigh the shipment on our scale; that weight is the one that counts.
- We assign it an RV reference and print its label.
- We note any visible observations about the packaging (dents, moisture, open tape).
- The system records the date and time of drop-off and the employee who received it.
If you submitted an online request, bring its number or receipt: the details load when we scan it and we review them with you.
05Inspection and chain of custody
Each shipment has an internal record that is never erased: corrections are noted next to the original entry. It shows:
- The drop-off, with date, time and employee.
- Every inspection, opening, repacking or incident, with date, employee, reason and what was observed. If the contents do not match the declaration, we note it and contact you before going on.
- Every status change, with the date it happened, the date it was recorded and the employee.
- The handover to the carrier and its tracking number.
- Final delivery, according to the information and proof of delivery provided by the carrier.
If we open a shipment, we close it again and record it there. You can ask us for your shipment’s information.
06Packing
- Use a sturdy box of the right size, with padding so the contents don’t move.
- Wrap fragile items separately and put liquids in a sealed bag.
- Remove or cover old labels on the box.
- Documents go in an envelope; for important originals, keep a copy.
- We can check and reinforce the packing at the office before labeling it.
07Weight and price
We weigh every shipment at the office, in pounds or kilograms, and that weight sets the price according to the price list. We confirm the price before registering it. If you submitted an online request with an estimated weight and the actual weight is higher, the difference is charged.
08Contents, declared value and customs categories
Declare in detail what the shipment contains and what it is worth. For purchases, bring the invoice. Dominican customs (DGA) classifies courier shipments into categories:
| Category (DGA) | What it covers | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| A | Correspondence and documents with no commercial value | No taxes |
| B | Up to US$200 (FOB value), personal use and unrestricted | Tax-free; a per-kilo fee may apply. Requires RUA |
| C | Over US$200 and up to US$2,000 | Taxes apply; requires an invoice |
| D | Over US$2,000, or restricted (permits, certificates) whatever its value | Formal customs clearance |
Category B does not apply to restricted items, to recipients without a RUA, or when the DGA considers there is a commercial purpose or that a shipment was split to avoid taxes. We do not promise exemptions: customs decides the category and the taxes.
Source: DGA frequently asked questions (in Spanish), checked on October 29, 2026. Customs sets these rules and they may change; the DGA’s official information prevails.
09Customs, RUA and documents
- To receive packages by courier, the recipient must be enrolled in the DGA’s Customs Registry (RUA).
- Clearance is handled by the carrier with the shipment’s details and documents: the description, the declared value, the invoice and any permits that apply.
- An incorrect declaration may lead to reviews, tax adjustments, delays or penalties from the competent authorities.
- A shipment may be held if the RUA, invoice or a permit is missing, or if customs doubts its value. We will tell you what is needed to release it.
- Exports from the United States: shipments worth more than US$2,500 per type of goods, or that need a license, require additional export filings. Let us know before bringing them.
10Delivery in the Dominican Republic
- The carrier delivers to the address provided or contacts the recipient to arrange delivery or pickup.
- The recipient may need to show their ID (cédula) or passport.
- If the address or phone number is wrong, delivery may be delayed or incur extra charges.
- Follow every status with your RV reference on the tracking page or in your account.
11Claims
Email [email protected] or call +1 9293752165 with your RV reference. We will confirm that we received the claim, review our custody record, request information from the carrier when applicable and give you the outcome in writing.
- Damaged package: photos of the packaging before opening it and of the contents, the damage note made when signing for delivery if any, and the invoice or declared value.
- Lost package: the RV reference and the recipient’s details. We check where its last movement was recorded.
- Missing contents: photos of the packaging and of what arrived, a list of what is missing and its invoice or value.
- Wrong recipient details: the correct details. If we made the error when registering it, we fix it at no cost; if your declaration was wrong, carrier charges may apply.
- Customs hold: the notice received and the documents customs asks for (RUA, invoice, permits). We help you understand what is missing; customs makes the decision.
- Wrong delivery: the RV reference, who received it if you know, and any evidence. We request the proof of delivery from the carrier.
Contact us as soon as possible: the carrier has its own claim deadlines, which may be short, and its compensation is governed by its terms and the declared value. If the problem occurred while the shipment was in our custody, we are liable as set out in the terms and conditions.
12Cancellations and refunds
- Before you drop off the shipment: you can cancel an online request while it is pending. If you already paid, we refund the payment to the same method.
- At our office, before handing it to the carrier: you can ask to take it back; we refund the transport not provided.
- After handing it to the carrier: the transport service is non-refundable unless a claim is resolved in your favor or the service is not provided.
- Additional charges: the difference for actual weight and charges caused by incorrect sender details are disclosed before they are charged.
- Approved claims: are paid according to the resolution we send you.
- This does not limit any rights consumer protection law grants you.
